Love is something the entire world is searching for and wanting. But many people are like the country song lyric, “Looking for love in all the wrong places.”
What is it about love that can make a person feel and do crazy things to obtain it?
There is something about being loved and being in love that deep inside people need. It’s really not all that surprising. God created humans with the capacity and desire to love. Bible verses about love can help us know and remember what love truly is. You will find more Bible verses about anything and everything to help you forget not the Lord.
God gave his creation an inner void to be filled with Him. His desire is that we remember He loves us, wants us to share that love with others and walk in His love. *affiliate links
Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet smelling savour.
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.
And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
We began with 7 Bible verses about love to remind you what God’s Word tells us. But then it expanded into hundreds of love Bible verses because God’s Word is a love letter to us.
Sometimes, we feel like no one loves us. We all need reminding that God loves us, because no one is truly unloved! (We have edited this post with more than 7 Bible verses about love.)
The word “love” is used for many people and things. You will hear people say, “I love chocolate cake, football or my car”, but that’s not really the love that is known as “true love”. It’s certainly not the love that people seek to be loved.
You may be familiar with the love of a parent, child, relative, friend, or a love interest relationship. We can feel a deep affection for someone, but any of these relationships can struggle with unconditional love. As young girls, we might even play a question game with a flower’s petals being pulled off one at a time. “He loves me, he loves me knot.”
The world is full of questions about love.
Music, poetry, dance, plays, movies, books and artists have given it their best efforts to describe love, but still miss the mark. Even if you put every song and sonnet ever written together, you’d still never truly understand love.
The only way to know true love is to know God.
1 John 4:7-10
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
God is the Creator of the world and all that is in it. He is love. True love is only found in Him.
Love is not a feeling. Goodness, if that were the case no one would ever know love because human feelings change like the shifting of the wind. One minute we feel love and the next we don’t.
If we base love on what we are feeling, we have a misguided view of not only what love is, but also on who God is.
1 Corinthians 13 is known as the chapter on love. Without God, no human is capable of this description of love. Look at in in detail and see how many of these qualities of love do you struggle with daily?
1 Corinthians 13
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
We can do many things on this earth that appear good, but without love it is all nothing.
4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
In those 13 verses of the Bible, we can discover areas of “love” that we need to do better in life or need to be shown a greater love than we are experiencing.
Everything! The Bible is a true love story of God’s love for His people. More personally, the Bible shows God’s love for His child, you.
The Bible is the only source for knowing love, knowing God and understanding the love He has for us and what He wants us to do with His love.
Just in the first 2 chapters of Genesis, from the love God used in creating the world, all the details of His creation to the relationship of love He made with Adam and also between man and woman, God is all about love.

The book of Psalms has almost 150 verses about love with the majority of them being about God’s love.
Song of Solomon gives an illustration of love not only between husband and wife, but also in the context of God’s love for His people
In the New Testament, all the books of 1 John in the Bible give us beautiful descriptions and details of what God says about love.
1 John 2:5– Perfected in God.
1 John 3:1- Given by God.
1 John 3:16- Jesus laid down His life for us
1 John 3:23– love in word and deed (means your actions need to match your words)
1 John 4:16-17– God’s love abides in us
1 John 4:17– Perfect love casts out fear
1 John 5:3– Love for God is obeying His commands
1 John 3:10-14– Love your brother
1 John 4:7– Love one another because love comes from God.
1 John 4:10– Love is God sending His Son for us.
1 John 4:11-12– God loved us we ought to love one another and God’s love abides in us and is perfected.
1 John 4:19– Because God first loved us.
1 John 4:21– Love your brother
1 John 5:1– Love the children of God by obeying His commands
Matthew 5:43-44-“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Luke 6-27-28 & 32-33– But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.
And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them. 32 “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.
1 John 2:15– Do not love the world
1 John 3:17– does not abide in us when we do not love those in need
1 John 4:8– If you do not love you do not know God because He is love.
1 John 4:9– God’s love made manifest to us by sending His Son for us.
1 John 4:20- You cannot love God is you do not love your brother.
Who do you love and what does the Bible say about who we love?
From the Garden of Eden, God set up a system of love. He gave Adam, Eve. Their instructions were to obey God’s commands. Even after they disobeyed God and were sent from the Garden, God gave them children to love.
So that began a relationship between God and man, man with himself, man and wife and parents and children.
Then we have descendants becoming neighbors, friends, and eventually enemeis.
Those descendants would eventually become people needing to be saved by a God who loved them.
The ones who obey God are His people, given mercy through His Son’s death on the cross for their sins and becoming His church known as Christians.
Whewww! That’s a lot of people to love.
So who do you love and what does the Bible say about who to love?
Did you catch 1 John 5:3’s description of love? Let’s look at this verse in context.
1 John 5:1-3
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments.And his commandments are not burdensome.
Let’s combine this idea of what God sees as love with Mark 12:28-31.
And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”
29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’
31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Jesus tells us that the greatest commandment is to “love the Lord your God with ALL your heart, soul, mind and strength.
He didn’t say some of any of them, part, half or even a percentage. He said ALL.
Look back to 1 John 5:3, telling us what love for God is.
We love God when we obey His commands, which are not burdensome.
We can tell God we love Him, but actions are even more telling of what we really believe. Our physical bodies cannot crawl up in our Heavenly Father’s lap and snuggle up to his chest to express our love.
There’s no physical touch.
But there is something bigger and deeper that happens to us when we give God our all in obedience. We experience a spiritual expression of love.
Loving God is obeying Him with all your heart, even when your heart wants something or someone else. The heart can lead us astray in so many ways. We tend to trust our feelings with matters of the heart.
As humans, we want to fill that void God gave us with so many other things on this earth. Those other things will only fill us temporarily and leave us so empty. God wants that God given void to be filled with Him. He wants us rooted, planted and full of Him so much that we reflect His image to others.
God wants us to trust all of our heart to Him because only He can truly fill that space.
Your soul is the spiritual part of you deep inside your body. It is your core. Your soul needs God. God wants all your soul because He created you to desire Him. As a believer and follower of God, His Spirit lives in us. Giving all of our soul to Him allows His Spirit to produce amazing and wonderful fruit through us.
That fruit is the fruit of the Spirit of which the first is love. Then we also can see joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.
We can imagine and think up so many crazy thoughts. Sometimes, we can even conjure up worries and anxieties in a situation without any of those things actually being realistic or present.
When we trust in our own thoughts and understanding, we will find ourselves in circumstances that God did not desire for us. Giving God all your mind, means that we seek His will and desire for our life.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
In this life we are going to find times where we are zapped. We can spin our efforts to be in constant motion, and become exhausted with nothing to show for it.
We tire.
There are times in life when things seem impossible. That’s when we want to give up. But nothing is impossible to God. When we give God all our strength, He gives us His strength to continue. We get a super-natural-heavenly recharge and a new perspective we would not have seen without Him.
Trusting God with all your strength draws you closer to Him and you feel His love deeper.
The second greatest command we can obey in love for God is the love our neighbor as ourselves.
Who is your neighbor?
Your neighbor is more than the guy living in the house next door to you.
Mr. Rogers sang a song for many years on his television show with intriguing lyrics.
“Would you be mine, could you be mine? Won’t you be my neighbor?”
Your neighbor is the person next to you. That neighbor could be on the bus, in the car, in the store, at the table, at the next table or even standing or walking on the street near you.
But your neighbor could also be the person living in the town, city, state, or even country close to your or even far from you.
Your neighbor is the person you are living on this earth and sharing life with.
You have a lot of neighbors and they all need love. Especially, God’s love.
Then Jesus ups the love for our neighbor or other people by adding what that looks like. “As yourself.”
The struggle with this command is many people find it hard to love themselves. That’s where giving God our all comes in to help. When we give Him our all, we allow Him to make us more and more into His image.
Loving ourselves is easier when we look more and more like Him and less like the flawed beings we can be. We won’t look selfish, prideful, rude, impatient, chaotic unhappy, mean, angry, and out of control when we love like Jesus.
Have you ever known someone that is just hard to love?
We mean the person that on your own power, you struggle finding the ability to love this person?
Maybe it is someone, you worked with at work or on project.
It could even be someone you live with or are related to!
Is it you?
Maybe the person we struggle to love is ourselves! If this is your struggle, remember whose you are!
The world wants you to hate your enemy, but God’s Word tells us to “love our enemies”.
We can be our own worst enemy, that’s for sure!
The Bible also tells us that we need to make the extra effort to love those that are hard to love! Love is not a feeling…it’s a verb. It is an action to choose to love anyway.
When we remember that Jesus loves them and we begin to pray for them, He gives us the power to love them through His eyes.
After all, He loved us first so that we can love! (1 John 4:19) Let’s do the hard thing and love. Especially love when it’s hard.
Loving God is obeying Him by loving your enemies. Loving your enemy is forgiving the person who has harmed or hurt you. Forgiving them is not allowing them to keep the power of hurt, anger and bitterness we feel in resenting them over us. Instead, it is allowing God to heal us and take those from us.
You never know what can happen to an enemy that you give to God in prayer. You cannot change them, but God can.

Some days, we may feel “unloved”. That is a lie. The enemy wants you to feel unloved, unlovable and unloving to keep you from believing that God loves you.
When you believe the lie, you will live that lie.
What we feel is a real feeling, but it is not always our reality.
You may feel unloved, but the reality is you are loved. You may not see a person near you in your current situation that loves you, but remember, God loves you. He loves you so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for your sins so that you could live with Him in heaven forever.
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
As His child, dearly loved, nothing can separate you from His love.
Romans 8:31-39
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies.34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died–more than that, who was raised–who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,
39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
