Tying the knot

Are you planning your wedding or planning to tie the knot.

 “Tying the knot!”

Have you wondered what does that mean?

What does a knot have to do with marriage?

No one knows for sure the exact origin of the meaning, “tying the knot” for a wedding ceremony…. seems there’s some debate on this. But, we do know that in Numbers 15, God told Moses:

The LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Throughout the generations to come you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments, with a blue cord on each tassel.

You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember all the commands of the LORD, that you may obey them and not prostitute yourselves by chasing after the lusts of your own hearts and eyes. Numbers 15:37-39

God uses symbols for reminders to us.

What a beautiful symbol God used for the Israelites to have a reminder of His Word…… They did have a tendency to forget Him, to forget all that He had done to save them and forget what He said.

( Sound familiar?)

And they did forget who they were committed to….God. (how soon we forget).

After a little research we found that a knot is binding…. strong…… it’s a lock. So by tying two people together in a covenant ceremony, a marriage is to be thought of as

binding,

strong…

locked together.

God who created marriage, also calls those who believe and follow Jesus, the bride of Christ.

Lord, help us all to remember the need to remember you in our marriages and bind our wandering hearts to you!

We’ve pulled together creative ideas to incorporate Scripture in your “tying the knot” wedding ceremony. Looking back there are so many ways we wished we had used in our own personal weddings!
