Old Testament Art Ideas for Kids

Day 1 – Light and Darkness

Preschool:

  1. Torn Paper Collage: Black and white construction paper to show light and dark.

  2. Sun & Moon Sun Catchers: Tissue paper on contact paper in light/dark shades.

  3. “Let There Be Light”  Use black paper and chalk to draw shapes

Elementary:

  1. Day/Night Wheel: Create a spinning circle with day on one side and night on the other.

  2. Light Burst Painting: Splatter or stamp white/yellow paint on black paper.

  3. Genesis 1:3 Letter Art: Decorate “Let there be light” with light/dark patterns.

Older Kids/Teens:

  1. Contrast Art: Sketch or paint using  light to dark shading.

  2. Abstract Light vs Darkness: Use oil pastels to explore value in color.

  3. Mixed Media Devotional Page: Create a journal entry reflecting on Jesus as the Light of the World (John 8:12).


Day 2 – Sky and Water

Preschool:

  1. Cotton Ball Clouds: Glue cotton balls onto blue paper to create different clouds.

  2. Water Droplet Dot Art: drop diluted blue food coloring onto paper as rain or water designs.

  3. Sky & Water Shaker Bottle: Create sensory bottles with blue water and glitter.

Elementary:

  1. Layered Landscape: Watercolor sky and ocean scene.

  2. Cloud Types Mobile: Create hanging paper mobiles with different types of clouds.

  3. Rain & Rainbow Crayon Resist: Draw with white crayon and reveal with watercolor.

Older Kids/Teens:

  1. Sky & Water Reflection Painting: Explore reflections with watercolor or acrylic.

  2. Bible Verse Doodle Journal: Illustrate Psalm 19:1 or Isaiah 55:10.

  3. Photography Challenge: Capture the sky or water in creative ways and create a photo journal.


Day 3 – Land, Sea, and Plants

Preschool:

  1. Fingerprint Garden: Use finger paints to make flowers, grass, and trees.

  2. Land and Sea Sorting Art: Glue paper shapes (or cut up magazine pictures) of animals, plants, and water creatures onto land/sea background.

  3. Textured Tree Art: Use items found in nature to glue onto a canvas and turn into new works of art 

Elementary:

  1. Salt Dough Earth Map: Create 3D continents and oceans. (or cookie dough!)

  2. Plant Growth Sequencing Art: Draw or cut/paste the stages of plant growth.

  3. Paper Bag Tree Sculpture: Twist paper bags into trees and add cut paper for leaves.

Older Kids/Teens:

  1. Botanical Study Sketching: Observe and draw real plants or leaves.

  2. Earth Collages: Use natural items (leaves, petals, rocks) to create artworks.

  3. Genesis 1 Devotional Illustration: Focus on verses about the earth and vegetation.


Day 4 – Sun, Moon, and Stars

Preschool:

  1. Foil Moon Art: Crinkle foil, glue to paper, and paint with gray.

  2. Sun Rays Collage: Paper plate with rays made of yellow/orange strips.

  3. Star Sticker Galaxy: Decorate black paper with star stickers and glitter.

Elementary:

  1. Chalk Pastel Galaxy: Blend pastels to create space scenes.

  2. Sun/Moon Artwork: Draw and color a day/night split scene.  

  3. Moon Phase Flip Book: Craft a simple flip book of moon phases.

Older Kids/Teens:

  1. Night Sky Painting: Acrylic or watercolor galaxy with Psalm 8:3-4 written in.

  2. Star Constellation String Art: Use cardboard, pins, and thread to make constellations.

  3. Sun & Moon Devotional Spread: Doodle and journal how the heavens declare God’s glory (Psalm 19:1).


Day 5 – Birds and Sea Creatures

Preschool:

  1. Fish Stamp Art: Use cut sponge shapes or potatoes to stamp fish.

  2. Feathered Bird Craft: Glue feathers onto drawn or cut-out birds.

  3. Ocean in a Bag: Create a sensory bag with blue hair gel and plastic fish.

Elementary:

  1. 3D Aquarium: Turn a shoebox into an undersea scene.

  2. Bird Collage: Cut and paste birds into a tree or sky.

  3. Paper Plate Fish: Cut paper and use glue. Use cupcake liners or tissue paper for scales.

Older Kids/Teens:

  1. Watercolor Underwater Scene: Blend sea creatures, coral, and light rays.

Day 6 – Animals and Humans

Preschool:

  1. Animal Mask Craft: Make simple animal face masks with paper plates.

  3. Animal Parade Painting: Line up toy animals and paint them in a parade.

Elementary:

  1. God Made Me Self-Portrait: Frame their own face with a mirror message: “Made in His Image.”

  2. Animal Texture Rubbings: Use textured objects under paper to create animal skin/fur effects.

  3. Adam Naming Animals Activity: Draw or match animals and name them.

Older Kids/Teens:

Day 7 – God Rested

Preschool:

  1. Resting Scene Art: Draw or paint peaceful nature scenes.

  2. “Jesus Is My Rest” Coloring Page: Color calming scenes with Jesus as the Shepherd. (Psalm 23)

Elementary:

  1. Rest Journal Page: Draw or write how they can rest with God.

Older Kids/Teens:

  1. Devotional Reflection Art: Mixed media journaling on Sabbath and spiritual rest.

  2. “Be Still” Watercolor: Paint still waters and reflect on Psalm 23 and Psalm 46:10
