How to incorporate creativity into Bible study for kids

How to Incorporate Art into Bible Study for Kids

Art can be a fun and engaging way to help kids connect with the Bible. By blending creativity with Scripture, children can deepen their understanding of God’s Word while expressing themselves. After all, one of the first things we learn about God in the Bible is, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

God created!

A little farther down in Genesis 1, we learn He made man and woman in His image. Have you ever considered that no other creature in God’s creation can use creativity the way humans can? Something to consider!

Here are 20+ simple ideas to incorporate art into Bible study that will make learning fun and memorable by engaging God given creative gifts. You can adapt every idea for the age, level and ability of your child/children.

1. Bible Verse Coloring Pages

Coloring pages aren’t just for fun—they can also be a great way to engage kids with Scripture! Find Bible verse coloring pages that reflect key messages from the Bible or your Bible study. As they color, children of all ages can reflect on the verse’s meaning, allowing the words to sink deeper into their hearts. Display their coloring pages for visual reminders. We like to make Bible memory verse binders with our coloring pages.

In our Shop and Bible Art Membership, we have coloring pages for all ages and just about any Bible theme you can think of from animals, vehicles, identity to emotions as well as Bible study themes.

Every Bible study we create and design contains Bible verse coloring pages because they are our favorite way to start kids incorporating art with the Bible. We pretty much all started coloring as kids so we also use them with adult Bible study too!

 2. Create a Bible Journal

Encourage kids to add words, thoughts, lyrics, or prayers in a  Bible study journal where they can draw pictures, write down Bible verses, or reflect on what they’ve learned. This personal journal becomes a visual record of their spiritual growth and understanding of God’s Word. It’s also great to later re read your words at a point in time and see where your thoughts are currently.

3. Scripture Art Collage

Turn Bible study into an art project by having kids create a collage that visually represents the messages or themes of a Bible story. Use old magazines, printables, and stickers to help them build a visual representation of what they’ve learned. A collage engages personality and their creativity as some will look neat, others messy and some may even feel abstract! Just glue it!

4. Visual Bible Timeline

Making a Bible timeline can be a fun way for kids to connect the dots between Bible stories. Let them draw or use stickers to illustrate key moments, from Creation to Jesus’ life. It’s a simple way to show the big picture of God’s plan throughout history.

5. Bible Story Dioramas

A diorama can be a wonderful way for kids to bring Bible stories to life. Using materials like cardboard, a shoe box, construction paper, and small figurines, children can create scenes that depict important Bible moments like Noah’s Ark or the birth of Jesus. Kids are bombarded just about everywhere they go with digital screens from phones, tvs, billboards to even wearing a screen on their wrists.

Making a diorama creates a moment in their minds that connects to their Bible study. Use a little more creativity and make your diorama with movable pieces! There’s no limit to creativity.

6. Make Bible Verse Art Posters

Bible verses can come to life through art! Help kids create their own Bible verse art posters. They can write the verse in their own style, add decorations, and use colors that reflect the meaning of the verse, making it a beautiful reminder of God’s promises.

Have kids create a poster where they visually illustrate the meaning of a Bible verse. They can draw objects, symbols, or scenes that remind them of the verse, making it an art piece that serves as a visual reminder of God’s Word.

7. Bible Character Puppets

What better way to connect with Bible characters than through puppets? Let kids create their own puppets using craft materials and act out stories like David and Goliath, or Jesus healing the sick. This hands-on activity brings Bible lessons to life in a playful and interactive way.

8. Illustrate Bible Stories

Instead of just reading a Bible story, encourage kids to draw pictures of their favorite scenes. Whether it’s Jonah and the whale or Jesus calming the storm, this activity helps them visualize the story, making it easier to remember and understand.

We designed a free illustrated Bible story timeline to help get you started with incorporating creativity into your Bible study. It’s always nice to have a visual of the stories from the Bible as you study. Use ours, or draw your own!

9. Nature Walk & Art

Take a walk outside and let kids create art inspired by the beauty of God’s creation. Whether it’s drawing flowers, painting sunsets, or capturing the details of a tree, a nature walk helps kids connect the world around them with the Creator who made it all.

Grab a scrap piece of cardboard and have kids draw a simple outline of their favorite animal or draw a landscape outline. Glue items from nature to your line drawing to create a work of art from God’s creation.

10. Bible Verse Memory Cards

Help kids memorize Bible verses with fun memory cards! Let them decorate index cards with art that connects to the verse they’re learning. Whether it’s doodles, stickers, or colorful borders, these cards will make scripture memorization fun and easy.

11. Poetry or Lyric Writing

Art with words is a beautiful way to encourage, engage and express creativity with Scripture. Many worship songs began with a verse or an experience with the Lord and used to inspire others through song. Poetry can be written just as the psalmist did in the Bible, detailing emotions and love for God. So grab the paper and pen!

12. Bible Bookmark Craft

Encourage kids to make their own Bible bookmarks, decorated with designs, verses, or symbols that represent different Bible stories. These bookmarks can be used during their daily Bible reading, creating a lasting connection to the Scripture.

13. Story Stones

Using smooth stones, kids can paint symbols or scenes from Bible stories. These “story stones” can then be used to retell the Bible stories in a fun, tactile way. It’s a great interactive activity for younger children. Painted rocks are fun to place in potted plants, deck decor or even placed in the flower beds along your house.

For a bigger project, paint pavers to create a walkway of remembering God’s Word.

14. Bible Art Gallery

Create a “Bible Art Gallery” wall in your home or classroom, where kids can display their artwork inspired by Bible stories. This gives them a sense of accomplishment in their creations and reinforces the lessons they’re learning. Art should be displayed for others to enjoy.

If you are new to our site, we love creating art as visual reminders to forget not the Lord. Visit our YouTube channel filled with Bible Art lessons for all ages or see our Membership for hundreds of Art for Kids lessons.

15. Bible Object Lessons

Instead of just talking about Bible stories, encourage kids to create objects related to the story. For example, for the story of Moses parting the Red Sea, they could make a model of a sea with paper or fabric. These tangible objects help bring the story to life. Act our the lessons by incorporating theatre drama. You can even create costumes to bring your object lesson to life.

 16. Word Art Puzzles

Let kids create word puzzles that feature important words or phrases from Bible verses. They can experiment with word search, crossword puzzles, or design a scavenger hunt for others to enjoy. Word puzzles are a creative way to engage art and Bible themes for all ages and levels. This emphasizes the power of God’s Word and helps kids remember key truths.

17. Bible Verse Stained Glass Art

Stained glass has been an art form used for hundreds of years to remind the viewer of Bible themes.  There’s several ways to approach making a stain glass effect to incorporate into your Bible study.

With tissue paper or colored cellophane, kids can make “stained glass” art featuring Bible verses. They can cut out shapes or letters and arrange them on clear paper or a window to let the light shine through.

Mix food coloring or acrylic paint with Elmer’s Glue to paint on glass for a stained glass effect.

There is a stained glass paint at craft stores that you can buy to paint the glass. It has a small learning curve because it needs to be applied thicker from the bottle rather than using a paintbrush.

We demonstrate a few of these ideas on our YouTube channel.

18. Bible Art Videos

For older kids, let them create a short video that reflects a Bible story or verse. They can draw, paint, read, sing, and then film the process, explaining how their art connects to the Scripture. This can be a fun and creative way to dive deeper into the Bible.

Video gamers can make visuals or graphics to create a short video with fun transitions, music or effects. Just think of ways you can use graphic art in your Bible study. Try your hand at stop motion videos!

19. Bible Mosaics

Mosaics were a huge part of the culture in many of the cities in the Bible times. Study the Bible and mix in a little Art History creating mosaics.

Using small pieces of paper, tiles, or beads, pasta, broken tiles or even dried beans or rice, kids can create a mosaic that represents a Bible story or a character. This can be a great way for them to work on patience and attention to detail while reflecting on Scripture.

20. Christian Song Art

Incorporate music with art by having kids create visual representations of their favorite Christian songs or worship lyrics. They can draw or paint scenes inspired by the song’s themes or verses, which can deepen their connection to both music and Scripture. So many hymns and songs paint a beautiful picture in our minds… how can we express those to the Lord in other art mediums?

21. Bible Story Comic Strips

Let kids create their own comic strip to illustrate a Bible story. This can help them understand the flow of events and add a fun, creative twist to storytelling. It’s a great way to see how they “see” the stories from the Bible in their minds. If you don’t want to create a comic strip, you can apply the same thought to a story board.

22. Psalm and Proverb Art

Since Psalms and Proverbs are full of vivid imagery and wisdom, encourage kids to pick their favorite verses from these books and turn them into art. Whether they draw a scene from Psalm 23 or create a visual representation of a Proverb, it’s a great way to dive into the poetic side of the Bible.

23. Bible Verse Sculpting

Using clay or playdough, kids can create small sculptures or objects that represent Bible verses. This hands-on activity can help them engage with the Scripture on a deeper level by turning it into a tactile project. Clay is a great reminder that we are the clay and God is the potter molding us into His image. We are also a vessel that needs to be filled with God to pour out to others.

24. Bible Story Playdough Mats

Oh the smell of a fresh cup of Play-Dough… wonderful childhood memories. Create playdough mats that depict scenes from Bible stories. You can preprint designs for kids to follow that incorporate you Bible study. Kids can use the mats as a guide to mold and shape figures, animals, or other items related to the story, allowing for both sensory play and Bible learning.

25. Lego / Block Creations

Building is a great hands-on sensory experience for many kids. Grab the Lego blocks or any building blocks you have to recreate structures from the Bible. Build a Garden of Eden, Noah’s Ark, Tower of Babel, the Tabernacle, the Temple or the cross and empty tomb. With Lego people you can even recreate stories from the Bible, similar to the dioramas. Building is a great way to incorporate Art with Bible studies.

26. Cake or Cookie Decoration

Baking is an art form. It is also a fun and tasty way to combine Art and Bible. With the incredible amount of available cookie-cutter designs, you can make cookies in any shape from any story or theme of the Bible.

Add your creativity to cakes and share your love of baking with others.

27. Sew, Crochet, Embroidery and Fashion

Fabric and thread can be used to create art with any Bible study. Use thread as if it were paint or create fashion that reminds you of a Bible theme. This idea can be as simple as crocheting a hat to give to someone to remind them they are loved. Just use your creative sewing ability to share beauty from God.

28. Movement- Dance

Get moving in your Bible study. How can you use movement to represent a Bible theme or story in your study? Make a dance to Scripture or a hand movement to a timeline of the Bible. Incorporating dance is an art form that helps the hands- on learners and gives the wiggle energy a purpose. Hand motions are also a great way to remember the timeline, a verse or even people from the Bible.

Incorporating art into your Bible study doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. By keeping things simple, creative, and fun, you can help your kids deepen their connection with Scripture in meaningful ways. Creativity is a gift we can use to bring God glory, inspire others and remind them of who He is.

So grab some art supplies, open your Bible, and let creativity flow as you explore God’s Word together with Art!
