In Ephesians 6, the armor of God is made up of six important pieces that help us stand strong in our faith and trust in God. Just like a soldier puts on armor to protect themselves in battle, we need to put on God’s armor to stay strong and safe from the enemy.
But…we can’t wear just one piece here or there. God’s Word repeats the words to us, “Put on the WHOLE armor of God.” The whole… all of the pieces because each piece is needed all together.
Each piece of the armor teaches us something important:
Belt of Truth – God’s truth holds everything together.
Breastplate of Righteousness – Jesus covers our hearts with His righteousness.
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace – We’re ready to stand firm and share good news.
Shield of Faith – Faith protects us from fear and lies.
Helmet of Salvation – Our minds are guarded by knowing who we belong to.
Sword of the Spirit – God’s Word is our weapon.
Prayer – The power that connects all the armor together.
You need the armor of God because you have an enemy! You may not have a physical enemy trying to take you down (then again you might), but you do have one that rears his ugly evil head in multiple ways.
There is a spiritual battle and your enemy is after the weak, distracted and isolated.
At the end of the letter to the Ephesians, (Ephesians chapter 6) Paul tells the church to be strong in the Lord and to “put on the full armor of God.” Why? Because we are in a spiritual battle—not a battle with people, but against the enemy, Satan, who tries to confuse us, discourage us, and pull us away from God.
Paul uses the image of a soldier’s armor to show how we can be ready to stand firm. Just like a Roman soldier would never go into battle without armor, Christians need to put on God’s truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God every day.
Paul wanted the believers in Ephesus (and us!) to know that God gives us everything we need to stand strong and live boldly for Him.
Why do kids need to know and remember the armor of God?
Because their battles might not look like ours, but they’re real—fear, comparison, doubt, peer pressure. Teaching them to “put on” the armor each day helps them understand how to turn to God no matter what they face in life.
The Armor of God isn’t just a memory verse or a fun craft (though those help!). It’s a lifelong truth our kids can carry with them and wear.
But what makes this armor so special? Each piece is a reminder of who God is and how He helps us.
When we wear the Armor of God, we’re not just protected—we’re also equipped to do God’s work, share His love, and stand firm in our faith no matter what challenges we face.
