The 10 Commandments for Kids

Teaching the 10 Commandments to kids doesn’t have to be boring (in their terms of learning) or complicated—it should be a fun and meaningful experience!

Kids are quick to learn and memorize things in this world at an astounding rate. Some of those bits of information are worldly and NOT what we’d want them to know. Why not teach them information about God and His Word at an early age and help them see the importance of knowing who God is and who we are to Him.

How to Teach the 10 Commandments to Kids

Here are some kid-friendly teaching tips using various learning styles for the 10 Commandments:

  • 📖 Tell the story of Moses and Mount Sinai. Kids love a good story, and this one is packed with wonder and truth. Yes, there are some questionable human moments, so walk them through the Bible as they are understanding it and at an age appropriate level.

  • ✏️ Use visuals. Coloring pages, posters, and object lessons help kids see and remember each commandment. (See our Bible Resource)

  • 🎭 Act them out. Use simple skits or hand motions to make each commandment come to life. Movement is great for hands on learners.

  • ❤️ Focus on love. Remind kids that God gave these rules because He loved Moses and the Children of Israel and He loves us! His “rules” are to help us be better people and know how to live a life focused on Him.

  • 🧩 Connect them to Jesus. Teach kids how Jesus summed up the commandments into two big ideas: Love God and love others. How does that apply to the 10? Well, the first, second and third commandments God gave was to worship God, serve Him only and not make idols. The other commandments were how to treat other people (your neighbor) such as don’t kill, steal, covet etc.

How do the 10 Commandments Apply to Our Life Today?

The 10 Commandments were written several thousand years ago. God’s people, the Children of Israel, were slaves in Egypt. These were the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph who went into Egypt during the famine. They endure hardship and sufferings at the hands of the Egyptians and cry out for God to save them. He hears their cries and sends Moses to deliver them.

They leave Egypt crossing the Red Sea in an amazing moment of God’s power.

After God led the Children of Israel out of slavery in Egypt, He called Moses to the top of a mountain. There, God gave Moses the 10 Commandments—important instructions written by God’s own finger on stone tablets. These commands would help His people know how to live in a way that honored Him.

But that’s not all God gave Moses. He also shared over 600 other instructions for living in the wilderness, and detailed plans for building a special place called the Tabernacle, where God’s presence would be with His people.

All of these instructions together became known as the Law of Moses or the Old Law. The Hebrews called it the Torah, which is the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

While God was giving Moses everything His people would need, something very sad was happening at the bottom of the mountain. The Israelites were growing impatient. Instead of waiting for Moses to return, they made a golden idol from the riches they had brought from Egypt—and they began to worship it.

These were the same people who had seen God’s amazing power: He parted the Red Sea to lead them out of Egypt! And yet, they forgot so quickly. Even with just 10 commandments, the people struggled to obey. But God was faithful. He gave them rules and boundaries not to be mean or strict, but to help them live in His holy presence.

For hundreds of years, God’s people looked forward to the day when the promised Messiah would come—the One who would save them once again. That Savior is Jesus, God’s only Son. He came to be the perfect sacrifice, the Lamb of God who would die on the cross and take away the sin of the world.

Jesus fulfilled the Law of Moses and gave us a New Covenant. God’s laws were no longer just written on stone tablets—they would now be written on the hearts of those who follow Him.

In our 10 Commandments – Connecting to Christ Bible Resource we walk you through the Old and New Testament to connect how they apply to your life.

What Are the 10 Commandments in Simpler Terms for Kids?

Moses was a special leader chosen by God to help rescue the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. As a baby, he was saved from danger and raised in Pharaoh’s palace, but when he grew up, God called him to a big mission—to lead His people to freedom.

God spoke to Moses through a burning bush, performed amazing miracles through him, and gave him the 10 Commandments on Mount Sinai. Moses trusted God, even when things were hard, and helped guide the Israelites through the wilderness for 40 years. He is remembered as a faithful servant and friend of God.

The 10 Commandments are God’s top 10 rules that help us love Him and love others. They were first given to Moses on Mount Sinai and written by God’s own finger on stone tablets. But after Jesus dies for our sins on the cross, a New Covenant would then be written on the tablets of our hearts. These commands teach us what is right and help us live in a way that pleases God.

Here they are in simpler, easy-to-understand kid-friendly language:

  1. Put God first.

  2. Worship only Him.

  3. Respect God’s name.

  4. Rest and remember God on His special day.

  5. Honor your parents.

  6. Do not hurt others.

  7. Be faithful to your family.

  8. Don’t steal.

  9. Always tell the truth.

  10. Be thankful, content, not jealous.

What Are the 10 Commandments in Order?

Here’s the traditional order straight from Exodus 20:

  1. You shall have no other gods before Me.

  2. You shall not make or worship idols.

  3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

  5. Honor your father and your mother.

  6. You shall not murder.

  7. You shall not commit adultery.

  8. You shall not steal.

  9. You shall not bear false witness.

  10. You shall not covet.

How to Memorize the 10 Commandments Fast

Memorizing all 10 Commandments might feel tricky at first, but it’s totally doable—especially with creative tools! Here are some tips to help kids (and grown-ups!) memorize them quickly:

  • ✋ Use your fingers! Hold up a finger for each commandment with a motion or keyword. For example, one finger up = “God is number one!” We have hand motions in our 10 Commandments of Kids Bible Resource.

  • 🎶 Sing it! Make up a fun melody or use a familiar tune to sing the commandments.

  • 🎨 Color and draw. Let kids color a picture that represents each commandment. I struggled coming up with appropriate images for kids to color…. I mean, you don’t want to plant a visual in their heads about murder or adultery for sur. Right? But I designed our 10 Commandments coloring pages and dot marker printables with simple visuals that don’t plant a negative image.

  • 💬 Say them out loud daily. Repetition is key. Say one each day until you can go through all ten.

  • 🧠 Use memory games. Try mixing up cards and putting them back in order, or use rhyming words and actions. Many families find it helpful to write these on index cards, hang a printable on the wall, or use a fun song to memorize them together!
